Department of Sociology

Department of Sociology

Government Arts & Science College, Tavanur

The Department of Sociology has emerged as a vibrant centre for social science learning and research in the region over the last several years. Catering primarily to undergraduate students from Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts, especially those belonging to rural and socially diverse backgrounds, the department plays a significant role in understanding and interpreting the socio-cultural realities of local communities.

The establishment of Sociology under University of Calicut has created a unique interdisciplinary academic space that bridges Sociology with Social Anthropology, History, Cultural Studies, Psychology, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, and other related disciplines. The department strongly believes in reframing academic engagement by meaningfully integrating the cultural traditions, social experiences, and intellectual heritage of the Malabar region into contemporary sociological inquiry.

Through the dedicated work of faculty members and the academic projects undertaken by students, the department fosters an atmosphere for producing new forms of knowledge that represent local realities with depth, sensitivity, and critical insight. The curriculum, seminars, field studies, and student research activities reflect the department’s commitment to innovation, social responsibility, and the exploration of emerging sociological perspectives beyond conventional stereotypes.

The department strives to offer an intellectually stimulating and socially relevant learning environment where students are encouraged to critically engage with issues such as social inequality, development, gender, environment, migration, media, culture, and social change. The three years students spend in the department are intended to be a transformative academic and cultural experience that prepares them for higher studies, research, employment, and active citizenship.
