Department of History
Government Arts & Science College, Tavanur
The Department of History is committed to promoting historical awareness, critical thinking, and cultural understanding among students. The department aims to help learners understand the past and its relevance in shaping contemporary society through the study of historical events, movements, cultures, and civilizations.
The department offers Minor Courses and Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) under the FYUGP curriculum. Through these programmes, students are introduced to Indian history, world history, Kerala history, historiography, heritage studies, and contemporary historical perspectives. The department encourages students to critically analyse historical developments and understand their social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions.
Despite being a single-faculty department, the Department of History actively engages students through seminars, discussions, academic activities, and interdisciplinary learning experiences. The department strives to create historical consciousness, democratic values, research aptitude, and social responsibility among students.
The department also promotes awareness about heritage conservation, cultural diversity, and national integration through learner-centred teaching and academic interaction. It seeks to inspire students to appreciate history not merely as the study of the past but as a discipline that helps in understanding the present and envisioning the future.
